Issue of Displaced Syrians: A Humanitarian and Political Challenge

Labib Nahhas, Programme Director of the Syrian Association for Citizens’ Dignity, highlights the complex challenges faced by millions of forcibly displaced Syrians as European countries tighten asylum policies.

“One of the main issues regarding refugees and displaced Syrians is the way it has been approached,” Nahhas told Al Jazeera. “While it is undoubtedly a significant humanitarian crisis, its core is inherently political, and thus the solution must also be political.”

Nahhas emphasized that the conditions driving the large-scale displacement of Syrians in recent years remain unchanged.

“The Syrian regime has collapsed, but the environment and conditions it created persist,” he explained.

To facilitate the return of displaced Syrians—an essential step in rebuilding Syria, given the shortage of skilled and committed individuals—Nahhas stressed the need to ensure safety.

“Although the regime was the primary cause of displacement, creating a safe environment is now critical to bring Syrians back and enable the country’s reconstruction,” he concluded.
