Amnesty International accuses Israel of perpetrating genocide in Gaza
A powerful new report from the human rights organization concludes that Israel's actions in Gaza fulfill the legal criteria for genocide against the Palestinian population.
Amnesty International has concluded that Israel's military campaign in Gaza meets the legal criteria for genocide, according to a damning new report.
Released on Thursday, the report, titled "You Feel Like You Are Subhuman: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza," represents months of extensive research. This includes witness interviews, analysis of visual and digital evidence such as satellite imagery, and statements from senior Israeli government and military officials. Amnesty asserts that the Israeli military has committed at least three of the five acts prohibited under the 1948 Genocide Convention: indiscriminate civilian killings, causing severe physical or mental harm, and “deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction” of Palestinians in Gaza.
“Month after month, Israel has treated Palestinians in Gaza as a subhuman group, denying them basic human rights and dignity, with the intent to physically destroy them,” stated Agnes Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International. “Our findings reveal that Israel has been systematically committing genocidal acts, fully aware of the devastating and irreversible harm being inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza,” Callamard added.
