Journalists’ Federation Raises Concern Over Israeli Violence Against Reporters in the West Bank
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for an end to the “escalating violence” against journalists in the occupied West Bank, following reports that an Israeli soldier struck a New York Times reporter with a loaded rifle during a raid on the home of a recently released Palestinian prisoner.
According to the newspaper, before journalist Aaron Boxerman could identify himself, the soldier used the muzzle of his rifle to hit him in the rib cage, causing a large bruise. The same soldier also pointed his rifle at another New York Times journalist, Natan Odenheimer, despite him having already identified himself as a reporter.
The incident, which took place on Saturday 25 january, was detailed in a New York Times article describing the Israeli raid on the family home of Palestinian prisoner Ashraf Zughayer on the outskirts of Jerusalem. However, the attack on the journalists was only mentioned in the 13th paragraph of the report.
